Ignace Lilien

He lived in The Netherlands from 1914 where he was trained
as an engineer at the Technical University in Delft. He studied piano with
Theodor Pollak, harmony with H. Ehrlich and instrumentation with Josef Suk. From 1918 onwards he was known as a pianist in Europe and
South America, principally as an interpreter of his own compositions. In the
1930’s he lived in the Bohemian Reichenberg (Liberec), where he wrote the
Modern Times Sonata (1935) for violin and piano. In 1939, Lilien returned to
the Netherlands. He spent the war years hiding away in Apeldoorn, surviving the
German occupation.
As an engineer he travelled
around the world and the folk music of those countries influenced his music, as
in the work Les palmes dans le vent for orchestra (1950).
